Dear Sir, Dear Madam, Romanian National Television develops on its second channel, TVR2 an antismoking campaign, the aim of this campaign being teenagers smoking prevention. The video clips broadcasted on TVR2 are delivered by JTI Romania. I applaud your determination to help its young people stay smoke-free. I must however urge you not to accept sponsorship of your programmes by the very companies who, by their nature, must undermine your efforts in order to ensure their own profit. Worldwide experience has demonstrated again and again that the tobacco giants do NOTHING that will reduce their profits. If they are sponsoring this campaign, you can be absolutely positive that smoking among youth in Romania will not decrease. After all, thousands of your countrymen die every year from tobacco use, and these customers of the tobacco industry need to be replaced if profits are to continue. Worldwide data again show that about 95% of all smokers start as teenagers. The tobacco companies certainly know this! Tobacco companies have only one motive in sponsoring activities of any kind: TO SELL CIGARETTES, ESPECIALLY TO YOUNG SMOKERS. There is no reason to believe that there is any other reason why they should dabble in the education business - the underlying motivation is the same. Please do not allow your Television to become vehicles for tobacco industry propaganda, however well it may be disguised. DONT BE FOOLED by the Tobacco Industry. There are many international anti-tobacco control activists and NGOs who will support and commend your efforts to work towards a Tobacco Free Society. Yours for a healthier Romania, one where children have a better chance of becoming free of tobacco addiction, and where tobacco companies are not able to dictate health policy,
