Dear Mr. Ashley, I applaud the commitment of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) to paving the way for young African American achievers to succeed. As TMSF continues to serve as "a legacy of progress" for young men and women, however, it is unfortunately serving as an unsuspecting vehicle for targeted marketing and manipulation throughout African American communities. Thus, your decision to award the 2005 Corporate Leadership Award to the Chairman and CEO of Philip Morris USA is highly disappointing. It is sometimes hard to see something for what it is, especially if that something is a corporation that is a major contributor and that has a senior vice president on your board. The tobacco industry has a long history of using its financial influence to buy acceptance from communities. Through various forms of philanthropy including sponsorships, community grants, and scholarships, tobacco companies have been able to dodge the criticism and responsibility for the deadly consequences of its products for smokers and nonsmokers alike. While providing scholarships for African American students is laudable, in the case of Philip Morris, however, charitable donations must always be put in the larger context of the mass devastation of health, lives, and families that its products cause. As you may know, due to unequal access to care and other factors African Americans are particularly susceptible to diseases caused by tobacco products. African American men are twice as likely to develop lung cancer than white men and have a 40% higher mortality rate of cancer of the lung and bronchus. Over 47,000 African Americans are killed by tobacco products each and every year. Giving an award to the CEO of Philip Morris USA - one of Americas largest tobacco companies which has long targeted African Americans, addicting them to a product that kills if used as intended only boosts its efforts to buy public legitimacy and cover up its long legacy of manipulation, deceit, and disease. It's sad to see such an important institution and its mission become part of a cynical marketing ploy to improve the corporate image of a company responsible for so much death and destruction in African American communities. I respect the tremendous work of TMSF, but am disappointed in its inability to truly honor the great man for whom the fund is named. TMSFs leadership and vision should not be compromised by money, but this choice of award is sad proof that it has been. I urge TMSF to reconsider its decision to award the CEO of Philip Morris and to take measures to cut its ties to the tobacco industry. Sincerely,
