Dear Sir/Madam: Recently Philip Morris (Thailand) Ltd. donated 3 million Baht (about $75,000 US) to two English language teaching TV programs on Channel 11, the Thai Government television channel. These monies and the crediting of Philip Morris for these programs should be recognized as part of common marketing and public relations efforts of Philip Morris and should be refused. It is unconscionable for Philip Morris to use the good name of government agencies and media, not to mention any association with prominent and respected persons, to promote their cigarette business. While appearing to be offering assistance, their underlying purpose in Asia is clearly revealed in numerous of their own documents made available through court actions in the United States. In short, these documents show that their sponsorship and philanthropy is focused on influencing individuals and organizations on policies directly related to their business interests. In the past, they have used sponsorship to corrupt research, regulation, and legislation as well as in threat of financial withdrawal. Government agencies should not accept tobacco industry sponsorship or other financial support. The Government media should be informed of the conflict of interest in publicising tobacco industry sponsorship. Most importantly, responsible public health agencies in Thailand should: 1. develop better surveillance systems for monitoring tobacco sponsorship, 2. seek alternative funding sources for tobacco company sponsored events and organizations, and, 3. should strongly enforce its ban on tobacco sponsorship. We call on all involved parties to recognize the ethical dilemma of accepting tobacco industry funding/sponsorship. Private tobacco industry companies should not gain "respect by association," but should rather be made accountable for the harmful products and social consequences they produce.
