Honorable Mr Abdullah Hj Ahmad Badawi Prime Minister Malaysia Malaysia signed the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), in September 2003. We are writing now to urge you and the honorable Malaysian parliament to promptly ratify and implement the treaty. We believe that the Malaysian government has advance so much within these few years in relation to to tobacco control. These measures are in line with the FCTC which contains the basis for the global response needed to curb the tobacco epidemic. Tobacco is currently the leading cause of preventable deaths killing 5 million people annually. This figure is expected to rise to 10 million a year by 2030 with over 70 per cent of the deaths occurring in developing countries. In Malaysia about 10, 000 people die every year because of tobacco realted diseases. Escalating cost of treatment for these diseases imposes a heavy bruden on the government surpassing any amount of revenue from tobacco taxation. If swift action is not taken, tobacco will soon become the leading cause of death worldwide, causing more deaths than HIV, tuberculosis, maternal mortality, automobile accidents, homicide and suicide combined. We are confident that Malaysian Government is going to ratify this Treaty as soon as possible. Neighbouring countries namely Singapore and Brunei have already ratified the FCTC. As a leader and example to many countries, Malayisa must thae the opportunity to be among the first 40 countries to ratify the FCTC. All the worldwide NGOs, Malaysian Citizen, and the International Community support this action. Thank you for your swift action in this matter. Sincerely, Clearinghouse for Tobacco Control (C-Tob) National Poison Center
