Context:
Ireland played an important role in negotiating the FCTC. Unfortunately, Ireland has yet to ratify the Convention. This petition is targetted at the minister in the hope that she will take the necessary steps to reatify before the deadline of 8 November.

    Dear Minister Harney,


    Ireland played a leading and crucial role in the negotiation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Its constructive approach was welcomed by member states and NGOs alike. We hope to see Ireland play the same role in the first Conference of the Parties in Geneva next February where many important decisions for global tobacco control will be taken. We welcome your announcement on 10 October 2005 that Ireland would ratify the FCTC in time to take part in the CoP. We urge you to ratify the Convention by the deadline of 8 November 2005 and join your 17 EU colleagues in becoming a full party to the world's first ever international public health treaty.
